Key elements when choosing your laserpen

Nowadays there is a vast range of affordable, high quality (or maybe not) green laser pointers on the market. The first decision any brand new “laserist” will have to make (except the decision to get one, but that one is really a no-brainer) is which model to buy.
Although many will start with a dirt-cheap, no frills 5mW laserpen, I urge you to think ahead and spend a little more right away. You see, if and WHEN you are amazed at the power and range of your (although rather crappy) pointer, and you just can’t get enough, you won’t have to upgrade it immediately. That being said, of course you may still want to upgrade to an even better and stronger model - but if you avoid starting at the very bottom of the range, you’ll surely save time and money since you don’t end up with 5-6 various models before you find one that really satisfies!
Again - it’s up to you… but here are some key points you should take into consideration when selecting your brand new, entry level (?) laserpen:
1. Size (portability) - does it need to fit into your pocket easily?
2. Power - are you just looking to point at stuff, or do you have intentions to go crazy and burn balloons and what not? How many mW do you really need.. or at least want?
3. Quality - cheap ass laserfun or something that lasts for years
4. Style - wanna impress your friends with the cool looks of your new gadget, or does the beam itself suffice? Are you going for a “pen look”, or some other variety?
5. Restrictions - does your country/state prohibit certain types of laserpens? Would it be a good idea to try and order an “illegal” version anyway?
6. Price- did the financial crisis reach you yet, and should you allow the lack of “green” to get in the way of an even Greener beaming experience…?!
All in all, you will have to weigh these factors and decide for yourself - but unless you are on a very very tight budget, please do not opt for the cheapest model available. Good luck going laser hunting!
